Bozkov: School

School lessons began to be held in Bozkov in 1749 and the first teacher there was Josef Jezdínský of Jilemnice. Until 1773 lessons were given “house to house” – the school moved around the individual households, where small children were also brought up and all the household chores were done. In the same year an auction was held for cottage no. 40, formerly owned by Šimon Dolenský, which the village and the parish priest Václav Dušek bought half and half for 140 gold pieces in the conventional currency "for the betterment of the teachers". The building was known as “Na Můstku”, as next to it there was a a gutter draining rainwater from the fields to a nearby puddle on the village green.
Belonging to the school was a field, a meadow, and a tract of woodland, and on top of that the teacher also had certain duties to the church, besides the usual organ-playing. There was no old age pension, and so the widow of the teacher Ouhrabek was forced to go begging. The teacher was paid by the village, received a small pittance from the church, and earned a little something playing at dances; the rest was supplemented by a hard-earned sabbatical from the parents - tuition fees. The teacher taught pretty much until he was on his deathbed, as is evident from records in the parish records. The building has been modernised after frequent repairs.
